Subject: I made this!
Subject: I made this!
I tried to be as faithful to the original Game Boy game as possible, and I believe the graphics and gameplay are pretty close. But the in-game music can
...
be a little clicky, so I forgive you for turning it off. (The Apple II's built-in sound support is notoriously basic.)
That said, here are some instructions that I completely neglected to include in the archive:
CONTROLS:
I, J, K, L - Move menu cursor / Move piece in-game
A, Z - Rotate piece left/right
RETURN - Select menu item / Pause and unpause in-game (P key also pauses)
ESC - Return to previous menu (does not work in game, use CTRL-R instead)
CTRL-S - Toggle sound
CTRL-R - Reset game
JOYSTICK - Move menu cursor / Move piece in-game
Button 0 - Select menu item
Button 1 - Return to previous menu
Button 0, Button 1 - Rotate piece left/right in-game
(Secret easter egg... shhhh)
CTRL-G - Only works from the level / high select screen. Starts the game in "Glitch" mode. SEIZURE WARNING
TETRIS will automatically run when you boot the disk. If you copied the TETRIS binary to a different disk, you may have to type "BRUN TETRIS" (without quotes) and press return to run it.
After a few moments, you'll see the custom Apple II title screen and hear one of the in-game tunes play. Once you've had your fill of that sweet, sweet music, press any key to continue.
From this point forward, the game should look and behave as close to the actual Game Boy game as possible. (With a couple of exceptions.)
TITLE SCREEN:
After the title screen, you'll see the original Game Boy credits followed by the original title screen. You'll see options for 1 or 2 players, but a 2 player mode is not supported. (The original Game Boy supported 2 players via Link Cable.)
Select 1 player by pressing RETURN or Button 0 on your joystick.
MENUS:
On subsequent menu screens, use I, J, K, and L keys or Joystick to select menu items, and RETURN or Button 0 to select.
GAME TYPE:
"A-TYPE" - The game gets progressively harder the more lines you create. The level increases with every 10 lines. The game ends when there's no more room for new pieces. You are rewarded with different win animations if you score more than 100,000, 150,000, and 200,000 points.
"B-TYPE" - Win the game by creating 25 lines. The game ends when there's no more room for new pieces. You are rewarded with different win animations if you start on LEVEL 9. You get the "best" animation by clearing 25 lines on B-TYPE on LEVEL 9 and 5 HIGH.
MUSIC TYPE:
"A-TYPE", "B-TYPE", "C-TYPE" - Select which music to play in-game. This music will sound choppier than the title screen music because it's very CPU intensive and must allow cycles for the in-game graphics to update.
"OFF" - Turns the music off, but enables sound effects. The game will also play a little bit faster and more accurate to the Game Boy speed with music off.
A-TYPE:
LEVEL - This determines the initial speed of the game. 0 is slowest, while 9 is fastest.
B-TYPE:
LEVEL - This determines the speed of the game. 0 is slowest, while 9 is fastest.
HIGH - Determines how many rows of "garbage" blocks fill up the screen, increasing the difficulty. 0 is no garbage on the screen. 5 is 10 rows of garbage.
GAMEPLAY:
It's Tetris, yo. Play some Tetris. Fill in lines. Avoid creating "voids." Have fun!
TOP-SCORE:
Use the keyboard to enter your name if you achieve a high score. Press DELETE or the left arrow key to correct any mistakes. Press RETURN to submit your name.
High scores are not saved to disk.
